I would like to state that I am Pro Police. I live in Bronx NY and to be honest when something goes wrong or I need help you better believe that I am going to call the police. The police department are here to protect and serve. They are here to keep calm and stability on our streets; without the police department we would have mayhem and chaos on our streets.
With this said I want to be clear with what this Blog is about. This is not about Police bashing or a black and white issue this is just about stating some facts and some of the reality of our way of living.
It is no big secret that the Big Blue Wall of Silence exist. From the movie called Serpico with Al Pacino and in the 80’s with the controversy in the 75th precinct the dirtiest cop in NYC history. Michael Dowd stole money and dealt drugs while patrolling the streets of Brooklyn.
The truth of the matter is that police officers in NYC are underpaid and over worked. Its not easy for them to come into low income communities and deal with all different types of individuals The New York Police Department is the largest municipal police force in the United States. Rookie cops in the NYPD receive a base salary of $41,975 per year. Total compensation, comprised of base pay and payments covering uniform costs and other considerations, amounts to $44,744.
The culture starts early. As soon as they join the police academy they begin their bond and brotherhood with their fellow cadets. They are taught to shoot at peoples chest area. They are told to always have their partners back no matter what and to always make sure that their safety comes first. Once they get into their assigned precincts now they have to settle in to the house rules and regulations. The senior officers now teach the rookies the lay of the land.. The problem with this is that most senior officers are tired of making stops of drug dealers that have $50,000.00 dollars cash in the trunk of their cars after a while they start getting greedy and think its ok to skim a little off the top. The rookies now have to remember to have their partners back no matter what. After awhile they start thinking all the people in the low income communities are criminals.
